GENERAL INFORMATION
Students at this level are competent at improvisation and understand the importance of developing an expressive voice for speech.
New students adapt and learn quickly being in groups of highly motivated serious speech students.
Students are able to experiement with various forms of theatre, structure and use of space. Students are exposed to various forms of acting techniques in order to discover which combination works best for them. All students at this level are introduced to monologue and characterisation. Senior students are encouraged to participate in public speaking forums and debating.
HOW LONG ARE THE CLASSES?
Each class is an hour in length, held in the drama studio, for a term which is usually 9 weeks.
WHAT HAPPENS IN CLASS?
Lessons are structured to include voice work, improvisation, text interpretation and impromptu speech for both the individual and group.
CAN PARENTS STAY FOR THE CLASS AND WATCH?
It is advisable for parents not to watch the students as students are encouraged to fail if improvisations do not work out. This is difficult before their parents as it seems too much like an audience.
WILL MY CHILD GET ANY PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES?
Each year N-QADA produces two plays – one for the older students and one for the younger students. Both of these plays are performed at Peace Lutheran College. All students must be available for rehearsals on Saturday afternoons. This is not a compulsory extra activity.
WHAT WILL MY CHILD NEED TO WEAR TO THE CLASS?
Our students are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing.
HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE IN A CLASS?
N-QADA classes are capped at 10 students per class to ensure all students have opportunities to be taught individually as well as having time to present.
IS THE EXAMINATION COMPULSORY?
The exam is not compulsory, however, it will be of great benefit to your child. Students can enter as a group, duo or individually. Students at this level are encouraged to enter individually. Exam work will cover reading prose, poetry and personal reflection. How students communicate with the audience about their program will be at least half of the marks awarded.
INDIVIDUAL LESSONS WITH N-QADA?
Individual lessons are available for all ages. Students can require an individual lesson if they are entering the Eisteddfod or Exams. However, there are students that come for indiviual lessons for help with oral presentations at school. These lessons can be scheduled before or after school.
The length of the lessons will depend on the student’s need. These lessons can range from half an hour to one hour in length.
